North Carolina native Michael Macchiavello made history Saturday night in Cleveland, earning a National Title and leading the NC State Wolfpack to its highest NCAA finish ever.
Macchiavello defeated Virginia Tech’s Jared Haught, 3-1, to take the national championship at 197 pounds Saturday night before an NCAA Wrestling Championship record crowd of 19,776 fans at the Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland, Ohio.
Macchiavello, the No. 4 seed in the 197-pound bracket from Monroe, North Carolina, defeated Haught, the No. 3 seed from Parkersburg, West Virginia. The bout was a rematch of their meeting for the ACC Championship on March 3 won by Haught in ultimate overtime.
The national championship by Macchiavello was the 18th by an ACC wrestler in the history of the NCAA Championship, and the second ever by a NC Native.
