Pre-Season Nationals Draws Huge Crowd!

Nations Best collide in Iowa!

CEDAR FALLS, Iowa – Another large and talented field competed in the two high school divisions at the USA Wrestling Preseason Nationals at the UNI-Dome on the campus of the University of Northern Iowa on Saturday.

The Lindsey Durlacher Outstanding Wrestler in the 11th-12th grade division was Henry Pohlmeyer of Iowa, the champion at 120 pounds. In an all-Iowa finals, Pohlmeyer defeated Tanner Rohweder, 3-2. Pohlmeyer was seventh at the Preseason Nationals last year, while Rohweder was third.

In a major showdown of national importance at 182 pounds, Xavier Montalvo of Illinois needed an overtime tiebraker to defeat Beau Breske of Wisconsin. Both are ranked nationally in the most recent Flowrestling rankings, with Breske No. 3 at 170 pounds and Montalvo No. 5 at 182 pounds. Breske was a Cadet Triple Crown winner in 2014, while Montalvo repeated as Preseason National champion, and also boasts a 2013 Junior National Greco-Roman silver medal.

In an all-Illinois final of national ranked stars at 126, Dylan Duncan defeated Gabriel Townsell, 7-0. Duncan, from Montini High School, has a No. 8 Flowrestling ranking, while Townsell is ranked No. 14 by Flowrestling. Duncan was a 2014 Cadet Naitonal freestyle champion and third at last year’s Preseason Nationals. Townsell, who is from Oak Park River Forest High School, was a 2013 Cadet National Greco-Roman champion and freestyle runner-up.

In another battle of nationally-ranked stars, Sean Cannon of Nevada stopped Corey Shie of Ohio, 6-4 in the finals. Cannon was second at the 2013 Preseason Nationals, and also boasts a 2014 USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals title. Shie was fourth at the 2014 Cadet Nationals in both freestyle and Greco-Roman. Cannon holds a No. 10 national ranking from Flowrestling, while Shie comes in at No. 19 in the Flowrestling rankings.

Gannon Gremmel of Iowa, ranked No. 7 by Flowrestling, won the 220 pound finals over Aaron Clayton of Texas, 8-2. Gremmel won the 2014 USA Wrestling Folkstyle Nationals title and the 2014 Cadet National freestyle title, and won the Preseason Nationals last year in the 9th-10th grade division. Clayton was sixth in last year’s Preseason Nationals.

Tough Louie Hayes of Illinois was the 106 pound champion, beating Justin Portillo of Iowa in the finals, 4-2. Hayes was third at the Junior Nationals last year in both freestyle and Greco-Roman. Portillo holds a No. 13 national ranking with Flowrestling.

The 145 pound champion was Max Thomsen of Iowa, who is No. 8 in the Flowrestling rankings. He beat Chase Piperato of Georgia in the finals, 3-0.

Other individual champions in the 11th-12 grade division were Josh Portillo of Iowa (113), Alex Rich of Oregon (138), Luke Fortuna of Illinois (152), Bryce Steiert of Iowa (160), Jacob Holschlag of Iowa (170), Wyatt Koeling of Utah (195) and Frank Tomaskovic of Illinois (285).

Champions were also crowned in the high school 9th-10th grade division on Saturday.
