This year’s 2015 U.S. Beach National Wrestling Championships will be held at Carolina Beach, N.C. on Saturday, May 30.

The tournament will feature competition in seven age groups: Bantam, Intermediate, Novice, Schoolboy/girl, Cadet, Junior, Senior (men and women) and Veterans.

Unlike in previous years, the U.S. Beach World Team Trials will NOT be a separate event. Placement in the U.S. Beach Nationals will now determine the U.S. Beach World Team. Because of this, only FILA-approved Senior weight classes will be competing this year at Beach Nationals.

There are four Senior international Men’s Beach Wrestling Weights: 70 kg/154 lbs., 80 kg/176 lbs., 90 kg/198 lbs. and Over 90 kg/Over 198 lbs. These will be used at the U.S. Beach Nationals and the World Championships.

There are three Senior international Women’s Beach Wrestling Weights: 60 kg/132 lbs., 70 kg/154 lbs. and Over 70 kg/Over 154 lbs. These will be used at the U.S. Beach Nationals and the World Championships.

All other age groups will not have specific weight classes, but will be determined by the blocked weight system after weigh-ins.

Registration for this event costs $20 online and online registration will close at 11:59 p.m. EST on Wednersday, May 27. On-site registration is available with cash or check and costs $25 for Kids, Cadets and Juniors and $30 for Seniors and Veterans.

Beach Wrestling was added as a style of international wrestling in 2005. Athletes compete on sand, in a style that features take downs within a ring. The sport has been growing in popularity across the nation and world.

USA Wrestling has sanctioned Beach events since 2005, and held its first U.S. Beach National Championships and World Team Trials in 2006. FILA hosted the first World Championships in 2006 in Antalya, Turkey.

The United States will be seeking its first World gold medal in Beach wrestling at this year’s World Beach Wrestling Championships. Four years ago, Donovan DePatto of the U.S. Marines won a World silver medal, the first U.S. World finalist. The U.S. has won numerous World bronze medals, including a pair of two-time World bronze medalists, Jeff Funicello of American Pankration and Carlos Dolmo of Blast Double NY.
