Wrestling RETURNS to Western Carolina University!

Headlock on Hunger, Nationals is not just another spring tournament. The outcomes from this event  could be of major importance for Western North Carolina in more ways than one.

First, Headlock on Hunger is an outreach of Beyond All Borders, working to bring together the wrestling community public, private, and sports sectors to battle childhood hunger in our region. With the recent devastation from Hurricane Helene as well as soaring food prices, childhood hunger has become an even greater threat in Western North Carolina. Proceeds from this tournament will go to support food collection and distribution programs right in the heart of rural Western North Carolina and will have a direct and positive impact on the blight of childhood hunger in the local communities in and around WCU.

There is a second significance to this upcoming event as well. Western Carolina University had a men's wrestling program until the mid 1970s. The program suffered the same fate as many other programs across the nation during that time, and a possible revival of wrestling on the WCU campus has been a hot topic in recent years. The opportunities that could be provided for high school wrestlers across western North Carolina and beyond could be a huge win for both the University and the WNC wrestling community in general. This Headlock On Hunger National's  secondary purpose it to help bring a spotlight to the sport for WCU's campus and community leaders who will would be part of making future decisions about the reboot of the Catamount Wrestling program.
