NC Teams Wrap Up Successful NCAA Championships

Robinson Wins Title for Pack! AAs abound for NC Schools

Philadelphia, PA- March MATness lived up to its billing Saturday, as the NCAA Division 1 Championships came to a historic ending Saturday night. While the top storylines were the first ever five time champion and a heavyweight upset for the ages, fans of North Carolina wrestling had plenty to be excited about as well.

Top billing went to NC State, who entered with eight qualifiers, and came away with three All-Americans, including their newest national champion Vincent Robinson. Robinson capped a superb freshman campaign with his first NCAA title, and the distinction of being NC State's first ever national champion at the 125lb. weight class. Robinson was joined by heavyweight Isaac Trumble who finished fourth, and Matty Singleton, who finished seventh at 174. Overall the Pack finished tied for 8th place in the team race.

UNC-Chapel Hill also had reasons to celebrate, as junior Lachlan McNeil finished fifth at 149, becoming  the sixth Tar Heel with three-or-more All-America honors in program history.

Homegrown favorite Caleb Smith of Nebraska also celebrated a return to All-American status for the second year in a row, finishing 7th at 125 with a victory over Stevo Poulin 18-5. Smith was one of three native North Carolina wrestlers in this years NCAA Division 1 field. Others included Ethan Oakley from Trinity HS (wrestling for UNC-Chapel Hill) and Mooresville HS standout Carson Floyd (wrestling for Appalachian State).
