State Freestyle & Greco-Roman Championships Draws Top Wrestlers

NCs Best Battle for Top Freestyle & Greco-Roman Honors

Over 450 participants converged on the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds Annex this weekend to compete for state freestyle & greco-roman championships. 

Action began Friday evening with nearly two hundred wrestlers competing for Greco-Roman titles. The five point throw came back with a bang, as wrestlers lit up the scoreboard with big lifts and throws.

In the small club division Dogtown Wrestling Club of Avery County earned runner up honors, with the Goon Squad from Shallote, NC taking home top team honors.

In the large club division Rocky Mount Wrestling Club and Greenville Wrestling Club (pictured above) earned team titles.

Saturday nearly 300 competitors battled for freestyle championships and several wrestlers tried to completed the coveted Triple Crown of wrestling by earning titles in all three major styles (more on triple crown winners later this week).

In team competition Goon Squad and RoCo Wrestling Club took home top team honors in the small club division. Rocky Mount and Greenville swapped places in the large team race, with Rocky Mount earning top team honors.

The season now continues with local events slated for the next two weekends in preparation for the SE Regional Championships coming up Memorial Day weekend, and the US Beach Wrestling & Grappling NATIONAL Championships coming to Wilmington May 29-30.
